Our Garden Project

At the previous St Luke site, students and staff started a school garden in 2010. It began with a 20 by 40 foot plot and turned into raised beds, a greenhouse, herb garden and a pumpkin patch. In 2018, St Luke moved to our current location. We were disappointed to lose our garden, but we are excited to re-establish the garden program!  We are so grateful to have received grants to help us rebuild our Garden Project.

Our grant from TD Friends of the Environment allowed us to purchase our Tower Garden. The garden has produced romaine lettuce which was harvested and used in our cafeteria. Currently, we are growing two varieties of lettuces, as well as cilantro.

The grant from the ChariTree Foundation, as well as donations from local businesses, supported the beginnings of our outdoor learning space in 2025. We have used this grant to focus on our outdoor gardens. Our Construction Technology students built the raised garden beds and restored a shed to store outdoor equipment. Our Physical Education and Turning Points students took the lead on digging up the space for the beds and then moving the soil and mulch, layering and filling the beds. Our Indigenous Art students used their research on petroglyphs to create vegetable labels on rocks, which were placed in the appropriate beds. Our Science students collaborated with our Hospitality students to determine which vegetables would be the best to plant and then researched growing seasons and yields. Students germinated seedlings in their classroom and then planted them in the beds with appropriate growing partners.

The Hospitality students will harvest and preserve the vegetables, using them in recipes that will support our school's nutrition program and catering opportunities.
